Subject: [Wd_general] miniPCI wifi modules with White Dwarf
Message-ID: <001601c5e17d$7f09afb0$0401a8c0@prescott>
Can anyone recommend any miniPCI based wifi cards that work well with White
Dwarf Linux out of the box. I've looked at the compatibility lists online
but I'm looking for first hand experience from users. I will be using this
with a Kontron X-board 861. Thank you.

anything hostap(prism2, 2.5 and some 3):
http://hostap.epitest.fi/
anything atheros via the madwifi driver:
http://www.madwifi.org/
prism54 cards should work as well, but are less tested(ie i don't use
them in production yet):
http://prism54.org/
you need to be using kernel 2.4.29 or higher(wd2.2 or newer)
your also need the wireless tools package which is part of the wd
optional install packages.
let me know if you run into trouble.

Subject: [Wd_general] ftdi_sio module
Message-ID: <002701c5e4b3$12b751d0$0401a8c0@prescott>
I would like to use the ftdi_sio module on White Dwarf. I have a couple of
questions about doing so.
1. Are the generic linux kernels in White Dwarf the same as you would get
off of kernel.org?
2. Does anyone have the compiled ftdi_sio.o module for White Dwarf?
3. What would be the easiest way to compile the ftdi_sio module? I do not
have a full machine with White Dwarf linux installed, just DimmPC modules (I
don't think those have enough space to install the kernel source?).

for the most part, yes. the hostap and madwifi source has been added.
if you grab the wd dev package, it has all the source plus all the
patches we've added.

not me. :)

i would install a full wd2.2 copy on a larger machine and then
install the devtools. then if you run into trouble you are using the
same kernel tree and we'll be able to help.
devtools install is #4 in the FAQ:

Subject: [Wd_general] wpa_supplicant
Message-ID: <005501c5ebb1$0e66bd00$0401a8c0@prescott>
Does anyone have any experience installing the wpa_supplicant for madwifi on
White Dwarf? I'm using White Dwarf 2.2. I can build the madwifi module but
the wpa_supplicant fails when doing a make. I've trying a bunch of
tutorials on the web with no luck. Thanks

it should be installed precompiled if using the 2.4.31 kernels:
wdlinux: ~# updatedb
wdlinux: ~# locate wpa_supplicant
/sbin/wpa_supplicant
wdlinux: ~#
when installing wd2.2.0(net install), scroll to bottom to see the
2.4.31 kernels
as for usage, see the docs:

download, run md5check
if all is well, kill your main(only main or you will lose remote
access!) sshd process
installpkg openssh-4.2p1-i386-wd2.2.tgz
ssh -V(make sure is version 4.2)
/etc/rc.rc.sshd start
openssl contains the libraries needed to compile SSL programs like
openssh
its not strictly needed to RUN such programs.
enjoy, and email me with questions
