Climate Patriots was produced in conjunction with The Pew Project on National Security, Energy and Climate which conducted a series of interviews with former military leaders to discuss the challenges posed to the U.S. armed forces due to the impacts of climate change and our energy posture. Speaker Background Grier Martin is a member of the North Carolina General Assembly representing the state's 34th House District since 2004. His district includes the northern part of Raleigh in Wake County. Martin is the former chair of the Homeland Security, Military, and Veterans Affairs Committee. In his tenure, Martin has received the Disabled American Veterans of North Carolina "Legislator of the Year" award and was named "Freshman of the Year" by the Conservation Council of North Carolina. Martin is currently a major in the US Army Reserve and served in Afghanistan in 2002-03. He is a graduate of the Army's Airborne School, Air Assault School, and the Field Artillery Officer Basic Course. Martin graduated from Davidson College and the University of North Carolina School of Law. He also has a LL.M degree in Military Law (International and Operational Law concentration) from the Judge Advocate General's School. Tom Cors is the director of government relations for the North Carolina Chapter of The Nature Conservancy. Before joining TNC in 2007, Tom worked on environmental security issues for the US Government in Washington DC. He was a legal consultant for the U.N. Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity in Montreal, Quebec. Through the American Bar Association, Tom served as pro bono counsel to Afghanistan?s Environment Minister for constitutional negotiations as well as assisting in drafting Afghanistan?s Environmental Management Act. Tom also was a Peace Corps forestry volunteer in Senegal.
